The R9 3900X was 22% faster than the 9900K and even the 3700X edged out the 9900K, making it 25% faster than the 9700K. Support goes all the way back to B350, in fact. With strong single-core scores, the 3700X should offer very strong gaming performance but in reality it is let down by its memory controller, which, although significantly improved over previous Ryzen iterations, still has limited bandwidth and high latency. Here the 3700X was 11% faster than the 9900K and a whopping 52% faster than the 9700K. As ever with compact builds, careful checking of dimensions is required before settling on the correct cooler for your needs and you may have to accept some compromises on noise or thermals to make your dream build a reality: Cryorig have reworked their diminutive C7 cooler into a stone-cold copper classic: The Cryorig C7 Cu. The 3700X also did well hitting 500 points and that placed it roughly on par with the 9700K, so this is a massive performance improvement for Ryzen. The Ryzen 9 3900X does just scrape the win in average fps over the i7 9700K, however. It will not typically be a make or break situation, however, if you are going for a high-end X570 motherboard, be prepared to shell out a few hundred dollars or more. Meanwhile the 3900X beat everything including the 2920X. The 3900 memory controller is significantly improved over previous Ryzen iterations and shows a better write throughput than the lower spec 3000 models, but it still shows relatively high latency which can impact gaming. Meanwhile, only the cheaper A320 forbid the Ryzen 9 3900X from overclocking, and most boards in the market can handle it even some A320. This opens up a wide range of coolers for the enthusiast to choose between. The 9900K was 8% faster on average and 13% faster when looking at the 1% low result. This approach reduces latency during thread synchronizations or frequent cache accesses, thus improving performance for all existing Ryzen processors. Testing with additional cooling capacity has indicated boost clocks 100Mhz higher, and of course lower silicon temperatures aid chip longevity as well. The reasons for not building a monolithic 16-core die on 7 nm are economic. Early benchmarks indicate that the , although further benchmarks are necessary to quantify this. The new 8-core part matched the 9900K and that meant it was 22% faster than the 2700X and 30% faster than the more expensive 9700K. Going back to our gaming benchmark results, we suspect these will provoke the most debate. It tied to Intel for less money, with a great bundled cooler, and a cheaper platform edit: and less power too. Since Ryzen hit the scene, the 7nm process itself seems to get in the way of high clock speeds, placing what feels like a hard ceiling on ambient overclocks. And it works: Even experienced overclockers struggle to beat the results these algorithms deliver. Professional video workloads should be no worry for the 12-core chip, either. For Intel, only the top-end Z370 and Z390 motherboards allow the i9-9900k to overclock, and some of them can barely handle the power consumption of the chip. Once you settle on a board you won't be changing it week after week. If you ignore the bundled box cooler, the 3900X is a little more costly per frame than the 9900K. Memory compatibility was something of a bugbear with previous Ryzen generations, especially the inaugural kit, but there have been efforts to rectify that with the third gen units. Of course, all the 3900X results were recorded with the box cooler as we noted earlier. Battlefield V sees 3rd-gen Ryzen parts trailing Intel's Core i9s again. This means the 9900K was 18% faster than the 3900X and te 9700K was 21% faster than the 3700X. The Core i9-9900K got back to its winning ways in Apex Legends, though here the 3900X was only ~7% slower, dropping 10 fps on average when comparing stock performance. The heavily hyped 3700X offers. I guess they wanted it to look like a closer battle. We're not using the replay feature to measure performance, rather we're dropping into the same map at the same spot and measuring performance that way. The cooler is very quiet though, so 87 C overclocked is respectable in our book. Motherboard costs are about the same, so that won't play a factor in this value comparison. Next up we have Forza Horizon 4. For productivity tasks in general, Ryzen is than the Core i9 as shown in our full review. At stock, the 3900X uses 115W while the i9-9900K uses 126W. On hand today we have the Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 7 3700X, with more content to come in the next few days. Then with an or , performance will be identical. Then we see the 3900X beating the 2920X by an 11% margin and the 9900K by a whopping 45% margin. The 3700X was able to improve on the 1% low performance of the 2700X by an 8% margin, making it just 1% slower than the 9900K and 5% slower than the 9700K. All of the models also come with beefy stock coolers, solder thermal interface material between the heat spreader and die to improve thermal transfer, and unlocked multipliers for easy overclocking. Sure, older h370 and h310 board will also support the 9990k, but no way their vrms would handle it either. The 3700X is a staggering 84% faster than the 2700X, allowing it to comfortably beat the 8700K and almost match the Core i9-7900X. There were a few titles where the 3900X nudged ahead by insignificant margins and there were quite a few where it lost by an insignificant margin as well. The deficit seen in Far Cry New Dawn was a little disappointing and the same can be said when discussing the World War Z results. Still, our recommendation goes to the. The overclocking results were disappointing. We can chalk that up to different measurement techniques. The i9-9900K wins this round, hands down, with easily better overclocking potential. Tuners can also adjust the Infinity Fabric clock fclk in 33Mhz increments to get an extra kicker during overclocking. Dual Core Mixed Speed 241 Pts 271 Pts Slightly faster dual-core speed. The i9-9900K peaks somewhere around the 4. Intel responded to previous generations of Ryzen processors by increasing core counts of its mainstream desktop processors for the first time in a decade. The Ryzen 9 3900X has the silicon advantage, four whole cores of it. What's common between the two is the 7 nanometer silicon fabrication process they're built on, which is significantly more advanced than the 14 nm process Intel has been stuck with. The 2700X is compatible with both the new 400 series and 300 series of motherboards. Results where the margin was less than 5%, you can deem those a draw considering the margin of error and that 1% lows are within the same distance. Sure z390 boards start at less money than x570, but these cheap z390 boards are crap and cant handle a 9900k. Age Newest 5 Months Much more recent. Single Core Mixed Speed 136 Pts Faster single-core speed. Several steps short of a custom cooling loop in cost, complexity and expertise required to set up, an all in one cold plate, pump and radiator can offer serious cooling capacity but minimal headaches. It runs at a base frequency of 3. The Ryzen 9 3900X is the highest clocked 3rd gen Ryzen chip available right now, booting from 3. The Ryzen 7 3700X was equally impressive. Making these results more impressive is that Premiere is a very pro-Intel piece of software. The R9 3900X matched the single core performance of the 9900K and was a full 19% faster than the 2700X. Power Consumption The 3900X is a 105W part, while the i9-9900K is listed as a 95W part. Comparing the overclocked 3900X shows that it is. Even cheap x570 boards look like they can handle a more power efficient 3900x. On an even more disappointing note, we somehow managed to end the life of our 3900X sample at this stage of the review. Have an extensive range of coolers offering good value and great performance for most use cases. This is similar to Intel's Speed Shift technology and reduces power state transition latency. We hence have the Ryzen 9 3900X and the upcoming 3950X. With a Gammaxx 400 cooler we were able to maintain a 43. The famed Cinebench R20 benchmark sees the Ryzen 9 3900X take the lead by 41% — a little over 10% for every extra core the Ryzen 9 3900X has over the i9 9900K. We tried running the chip on a different X570 board among other tests before sadly declaring it dead. Although we see a minor 5% deficit for the average frame rate, the Ryzen processor was up to 13% slower when looking at the 1% low performance. We may earn a commission for purchases using our links. Given that the 3950x does a 4. We calculate which measures real world performance for typical users. At best we were able to boost the 3900X multi-core score by 4% while the 3700X saw a 6% increase. Put in other words, the R9 3900X was 41% faster than the 9900K in Blender and yet it reduced total system consumption by 8%. Overall a remarkable performance uplift over the 2nd-gen parts. The way I see things, that is trying a bit too hard to give some notion of parity of the 3900X to the i9-9900K. At 1440p the 9900K was just 4% faster than the 3900X which is a close call. When overclocked, the i9-9900K uses a fair amount more here as well. The 3700X did better relative to the 9700K, but again gaming looks solid on Intel's side. Just because it could hit 5ghz, did not make a good chip. But Intel definitely does not win this round. Meanwhile the 3900X was a little over 60% faster than the 9900K and even offered a 17% performance uplift over the Threadripper 2920X. With similar speeds reachable with the Ryzen 9 3900X and an X570 board, memory support specifically is closer to a tie than it seems. With the 9th generation Core, Intel achieved core-count parity. For example, you can see how the 2700X is 14% slower than the 9900K. Gaming Benchmarks Testing with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, 3rd-gen Ryzen is ~10% faster than the 2700X which is good, but not good enough to beat the 9900K, at least when looking at the average frame rate. AnandTech was able to get it to 4. For more context on the capabilities of the latest Ryzen series, check out our day-one reviews of the , and the mainstream. It also looks like a compelling part, so look to these pages for a review soon. Once again we see similar margins between the tested processors, though this time the 3700X is much closer to the 9900K than it is to the 2700X. I don't agree with that logic at all, and as an arbitrary example, 95% of the performance for 60% of the cost is a no-brainer to me. But with a thirst less than the 8-core Ryzen 7 2700X the 7nm process is evidently paying dividends where it counts. Not a big difference though and as you might expect the gaming experience was identical. However, if you plan to out of the box then the 3900X is a little cheaper than the Intel processor. Ultimately, that results in a more efficient processor during all facets of operation. Scoring an incredible 7086 points makes it 24% faster than the Threadripper 2920X. Cost Per Frame What does 3rd-gen Ryzen offer in terms of value? We believe after testing the 4. These new 3rd-gen Ryzen parts are already looking like kings of productivity. When looking at the Handbrake results at stock speeds, both processors use about the same power 138W. In time that may change, but for now higher clocks still rule the 1080p gaming world. We were hoping these 3rd-gen Ryzen processors would be a little more punchy in The Division 2. Though new, from what we have seen in our review as well as others on the web, the Ryzen 9 3900X tops out around 4. This has been achieved through various upgrades and streamlining efforts applied across branch prediction, cache, integer execution, and floating point. This meant the 3700X was slightly slower than the 9900K but much faster than the 9700K. Then there were games where the 3900X was slower by a 10% margin or greater, seven titles in total where Ryzen was up to 16% slower. The X570 motherboards are, on average, a bit more expensive -- they certainly peak higher than any Z390 based motherboard, so that needs to be taken into account as well. This means Intel will have a slight performance advantage, but keep in mind that the cost of the cooler will be factored into our value analysis for each processor. It also improves cache access latency. Benchmarks We tested the latest version of World War Z which brings about a number of fixes and performance improvements. Intel and the Core i9-9900K do make a solid showing and flex its per-core performance advantage, though, in single-thread Geekbench, Cinebench R15, and Y-Cruncher. On average the 3900X was 6% slower than the 9900K when gaming. The 9700K was also 6% faster than the 3700X. Single Core Mixed Speed 125 Pts 136 Pts Slightly faster single-core speed. Using the older build the 3900X took 48 seconds to complete the workload while the 3700X took 68 seconds. The second battle royale title we tested is Fortnite and while the 3900X was plenty fast, it still lagged behind. For the most part we feel X570 boards -- particularly the more premium models -- should only be paired with the 3900X or the upcoming 3950X. One of the other changes with Zen 2 and the is the implementation of. Between the same five board partners, there are 58 boards to choose from just on Z390. Moving on we have some Rage 2 results and here the 3900X and 3700X perform very well, offering slightly better 1% low performance than the 2700X which puts them on par with the 8700K. The margins at 1440p are reduced and now the 9900K is just 5% faster than the 3900X. For its slick minimalism and excellent cooling capacity, the X62 is PremiumBuilds performance pick. Far Cry New Dawn has always been troublesome for Ryzen processors. Benchmarks illustrate that the overclocked. Previous benchmarks have been based on 2v2 gameplay, but it seems where Ryzen really struggles is with the bigger 4v4 matches when all teams are maxed out. All trademarks used are properties of their respective owners. Many require very low profile coolers, but thankfully companies such as Cryorig cater to the market. The fitting mechanism is simple using a cross bar to hold the cold plate in place and BeQuiet! Getting a memory kit that allows Dual Channel is the most important but so is the clock, latency, overall compatibility and sometimes, even looks. Octa Core Mixed Speed 641 Pts 1039 Pts Much faster octa-core speed. Octa Core Mixed Speed 1039 Pts Faster octa-core speed. This new Pinnacle Ridge processor features the Zen+ architecture with 12nm lithography compared to 14nm previously. Despite offering silky smooth frame rates in Battlefield V, the 3900X was still quite a bit down on the 9900K, trailing by an 8% margin for the average frame rate and 11% for the 1% low. We see similar margins in the newer version, though here the Core i9-7900X manages to edge ahead of the 2920X. The 9900K is now just 10% faster than both the 3900X and 3700X. Intel over the last couple of generations has been able to reach a higher peak overclock when using ambient cooling methods sub-ambient as well. Bumping the resolution up to 1440p reduces the margins significantly. Overclocking, whether automatic or manual, affects temperatures. Here we see the 2700X allowing for just 98 fps on average and that made the 9900K 26% faster. The 3700X was still 9% faster than the 2700X, so we see recurrently how 3rd-gen Ryzen series is a good step forward when it comes to gaming. Performance was perfectly acceptable but for maximum performance the 9900K does deliver the best results. The Intel i9-9900K is an 8 core, 16 thread, unlocked 9th generation Coffee Lake processor. Out of the box, the 3700X, 3600X and 3600 achieve similar quad core speeds but the 16 threaded 3700X is. Basically 2:1 sees the Infinity Fabric clocked at a quarter of the memory speed, while 1:1 is half. Yet the company has been catching up with Intel across the past two years at remarkable speed and changing the face of the market. Giving Intel the win on mobos is 100% wrong without question. This is in-game performance and here the 9900K was 17% faster which is a large margin. Ryzen has always been pushed to the limit in terms of clock speed and Zen 2 is no different it seems. Also, unless you use a 144Hz monitor, the diference is purely synthetic. Then at extreme high frame rates, a 5% increase is going from 200 to 210 fps, which is not a margin worth getting too excited over. When compared to the Intel competition, purely for gaming, the 3700X is on par with the 9700K and 8700K in terms of value. Similar margins are also seen when testing with Corona, the 3900X was 30% faster than the 9900K, while the 3700X was only 10% slower. Age Newest 53 Months 5 Months Hugely more recent. This change yields an average of 4. When it comes to power consumption the new Ryzen processors are extremely efficient. Then when it comes to decompression work, 3rd-gen Ryzen still enjoys a handy performance advantage. I care too much about finding that sweet spot in getting value for my money. Where the 3900X did surprise was in Monster Hunter World. As with previous-gen Ryzen, memory overclocking confers big performance speedups for gaming. This is also half-true for Ryzen 3rd gen Ryzen 3000 but even if by default, the Infinity Fabric speed runs at half the memory clock, it can be decoupled and further tweaked to improve performance. Multi Core Mixed Speed 650 Pts 2134 Pts Hugely faster 64-core speed. Intel's K-series models, in contrast, don't come with a bundled cooler. Image 14 of 14 Intel has been the leader in gaming performance for decades. This is better explained as out of the box and then manual overclocked. At a later time we'll check out how this looks for B350 and X370 motherboards as well. I saw a 12 core 3900x working in a 2. Yields are less troublesome to high-core-count processors, clock speeds are not tethered to perfect, or near-perfect, dies, and the Ryzen 9 3900X need not sacrifice speed for multicore performance. Age Newest 14 Months 5 Months Much more recent. Msi gave 3rd gen updates to all a320 boards. Using a more elaborate and expensive setup like the Corsair Hydro Series H115i the R7 3700X peaked at just 73 degrees after an hour long Blender stress test. Our calculated values are checked against thousands of individual. A quick look at gaming performance with World War Z we see no major performance difference on both boards. However, now we see the 3700X brushing aside the 9900K by a 15% margin, basically matching the 10-core 7900X. That means the 3900X comes with ~273mm 2 of silicon that sports ~9. That should boost performance significantly because the Zen 2 microarchitecture, like its predecessor, benefits heavily from increased memory performance particularly in gaming. If the applications used are not heavily threaded, the i9-9900K shows off its prowess. Quad Core Mixed Speed 430 Pts 531 Pts Faster quad-core speed. But at the end of the day it all boils down to real-world performance. The Ryzen 9 3900X is close, however, and making great strides beyond the capability of the Zen+ Ryzen 7 2700X. The new scheduler arrived with the Windows 10 May update and benefits both current-gen and previous-gen Ryzen models Threadripper and Ryzen 3000 processors. Power Consumption Well, would you look at that. A battle that needs no further introduction, we're pitting the new Ryzen 9 3900X head to head against the Core i9-9900K in 36 games. But, for now, it rules the roost, bringing a whole lot of performance for gaming and heavy-duty multitasking to the fore. But while overall power measurements are important, they are more useful when we use them to gauge how much work is done per watt. Multi Core Mixed Speed 1482 Pts 2134 Pts Much faster 64-core speed. Pricing, on average, is going to be higher for the X570 chipsets boards. I've seen reviews from 5 different sites and the conclusions bounce all over the place, which makes me think there is much to do on the software optimization side. The benefits of this topology are obvious. Top of the tree is the Dark Rock 4 Pro. Multi Core Mixed Speed 2134 Pts Much faster 64-core speed. The all-black finish keeps it classy. It will even clear the tiny 7. All the following recommendations are dual channel configurations to maximize performance. Factoring in the cooler means that the 3900X is now better value than the 9900K and the 3700X is now very similar to the Core i5-9600K. Or, if general cost and maturity is a factor, give it a tie. Quad Core Mixed Speed 531 Pts Faster quad-core speed. Overall the new Ryzen 3000 series delivers and the improvements in power efficiency are nothing short of amazing. At the same time, if you're mostly concerned about getting the most out of these new Ryzen processors, neither is required but they do complement the platform at the high-end. Even though the 2700X excels at video production, streamers should look elsewhere. We'll also provide some 3900X and 3700X performance figures using an all-in-one liquid cooler. The advantages of increased density come in the form of higher performance, better power efficiency, more cores, and more cache packed into a smaller area than the first-gen Ryzen models, all of which makes third-gen Ryzen a potent adversary for Intel both on the desktop and in the data center. The 3700X was also 12% faster than the 2700X, a decent uplift. Moving on to F1 2019, the 3900X was 7% slower out of the box, but once overclocked that margin was reduced to 3% as both processors enabled a similar level of performance. This is similar to Intel's Speed Shift technology and reduces power state transition latency from 30ns to 1ns, which ultimately saves power and boosts efficiency. Just as remarkable is the 3900X which is comparable to the 2700X and 7900X, making it worlds more efficient than the 9900K and 2920X. It'll be really interesting to see against the R5 2600 and 1600 -- our full review is coming in a few days. Both processors delivered similar average frame rates, yet the 1% low figure was 13% higher with the Ryzen processor. Then when overclocked the average frame rates were much the same while the Ryzen processor still provided better minimum frame rate performance. We'll put hard numbers behind the differences on the following pages. The 9900K and 9700K do offer slightly better 1% low performance, around 7% better. However, the increased capacity allows the processor to store more data closer to the execution cores, thus increasing cache hit rates that ultimately yield more performance. The extra cores deliver big gains in heavily threaded applications, and the improved architecture offers great gaming performance, too, making for an incredibly well-rounded processor. In fact it was comparable to the Ryzen 5 2600 and 1600 along with the old quad-core 7700K. On the Intel side, while X570 is brand-new, the Z390 chipset has been out for nearly a year. We saw similar margins for the stock and overclocked results. Both stock and overclocked the 9900K was ~2% faster than the 3900X which is a negligible difference. The Resident Evil 2 results are interesting: stock the 3900X was 6% slower on average, but provided stronger 1% low performance, beating the 9900K by 4%.
