Huawei P20 Pro review: a worthy iPhone X and Galaxy S9 rival

You can shoot at 3x without digital zoom, and even get good results at 5x. This copy is for your personal, non-commercial use only. There's a fingerprint scanner below the Huawei P20 Pro's display and, like those of every recent higher-end Huawei, it's extremely fast. This looks particularly neat as this little area can still be used for notification icons when blacked out. This metal is aluminium, but it has a polished rather than anodized finish, and looks more like steel. Should you buy the Huawei Mate 20 Pro or the P20 Pro? The effect is a luminescent colour progression that is unique amongst smartphones. In the samples below you can see that depth estimation is very accurate and enables a nicely blurred background even on complex and more difficult scenes. At 98 points, it just manages to push the Google Pixel 2 off the number one spot in the video ranking, making the P20 Pro the best all-around mobile device for imaging that money can currently buy. Purple at the top turns smoothly to a greenish-turquoise at the bottom, the sort of finish you see more often on a supercar than a phone. It outputs data binned in 2 × 2 pixel units, resulting in 10Mp image output. Again, noise levels are very low, making flash use a real option on the Huawei. Flash performance is generally repeatable, and without any ambient illumination, white balance, color rendering and target exposure are all good. Huawei Mate 30 Pro The Huawei P20 Pro does a very good job in terms of exposure. The results are simply that good. Although and handle multi-task demanding apps without issue. To learn more or opt-out, read our. Perhaps more importantly, the P30 Pro boasts the 40W SuperCharge capabilities from the Mate 20 Pro. And even holds up well in lower light. This is possible because the main camera in combination with the 20Mp monochrome secondary sensor is already capable of delivering decent zoom detail at a 2x zoom factor. Category Huawei Mate 20 Pro Huawei P20 Pro Operating system Android 9. That means rainy day photography is nothing to worry about. While there's no proximity sensor to tell when your face is in front of the screen, the Huawei P20 Pro's gyroscope senses when the phone has been picked up, or taken out of your pocket. In addition, the shape of the bokeh is very pleasant, with a smooth gradient and blur transition. The Huawei P20 Pro triple camera: The main camera is at the center, the monochrome module at the bottom left in this image and the tele at the top right. Huawei has clearly tried very hard with this phone. Huawei doesn't have quite as good an excuse, as there's just a high-res camera and speaker on the Huawei P20 Pro's front. Image Credit: TechRadar This will be a bit of an audience-divider. While you miss out on the wide-angle lens, the resultant images from both phones are near-identical. The Kirin 980 is also a huge upgrade from the 970 in the P20 Pro. Especially now that you can grab a P20 Pro for around 500 euros, which is even cheaper than the regular Huawei P30 too. Aesthetically, the rear camera design, notch, and curved display look a lot better than the P20 Pro — and that phone is already a looker. Actual data may vary owing to differences in individual products, software versions, application conditions, and environmental factors. Although Huawei has confirmed the Huawei P20 Pro will receive the update, along with most other pre-existing Huawei phones, there's no word on the future of Huawei phones in 2020 and beyond. At default settings, the strength and transition are pleasantly natural. Huawei P20 Pro autofocus performance at 20 Lux Texture 72 and Noise 79 In part thanks to its larger-than-usual main camera sensor, the Huawei performs very well in terms of detail and noise. The Huawei P20 Pro also has a few more unusual tweaks. On paper, the Huawei P30 Pro is certainly the more flexible shooter. Product pictures and display contents on the foregoing pages are provided for reference only. This does suggest it is built for speed rather than security, though. But does the P30 Pro do enough to make it a worthwhile yearly upgrade? You will have to look very closely to spot any of these imperfections, however. However, the P20 Pro still offers value for those looking for an excellent camera experience in a hardware and software package that still feels up-to-date. However, Huawei has done well here: the phone feels and looks expensive, and about as slim and light as we could hope for given its screen size. Its face unlock is exceptionally fast too. Crop from Apple iPhone X image The monochrome secondary camera setup also helps deliver very good results in bokeh mode. There are some quirks to the Huawei design and software to get used to, but the remarkable work done on the camera means the P20 Pro is still one of the most versatile out there, whether you're a happy snapper or an amateur enthusiast photographer. The heart of the latest Huawei P-series models replaces the with a faster. The Root gives you complete control over your Android phone. Again, the between detail retention and noise reduction is excellent, resulting in good detail and very well-controlled noise across all light levels. In this test scene the P20 Pro delivers very good detail at long range 8x. The switch to the 7nm node allows for much more energy efficiency, and the all-new Cortex A76 cores are blazing fast. The P20 Pro introduced three cameras at the back, and Huawei has refined the formula in the Mate 20 Pro. To me, the wide-angle lens is much more useful in day-to-day shooting scenarios. Only if you click through to the full version of the image, some loss of fine detail and slight become visible. Detail at a distance is simply excellent with the P30 Pro, although at medium zoom ranges is a much closer contest. However, the Samsung does a slightly better job of appearing to be 'all screen' front-on, because the Huawei's screen does not curve around at the sides. As a result, the Huawei P20 Pro excels in the zoom category, delivering results that are a cut above the rest. Specs vs specs The two handsets are similarly sized, though the P30 Pro is slightly larger. The P20 Pro is a great device in its own right, but to me, the Mate 20 Pro feels like a much better effort. P20 Pro: Which should you buy? As such, the P30 Pro offers 2,340 x 1,080 pixels of resolution versus 2,240 x 1,080. When it came out, the P20 Pro was able to go head-to-head with the likes of the and the though it's worth noting both are more powerful , and it's more affordable than either of those devices too. But if you're in the market for a new device, the Mate 20 Pro is an obvious choice. Exposure on the subject is very good. Continuing with the design theme, I like the fact that there's no fingerprint sensor on the front. Noise is well-controlled, too, and image detail is nicely preserved. The Mate 20 Pro not only has excellent battery life, but it can also charge other phones. The single-lens Pixel 2, on the other hand records, a visibly softer and less detailed image than the Huawei. Target exposure is spot-on in most situations, even in very low light, and our sample images show very good dynamic range that is a touch better than for most of the direct competitors. The Google Pixel 2 comes close, but does not quite match the Huawei. That said, this plastic film does attract fingerprints pretty readily, so you may want to swap it for a tempered glass screen protector down the line. In bright light, image noise in blue skies is pretty much unnoticeable, and noise is very well-controlled and pleasantly finely-grained down to very low light levels. On the inside is a powerful Kirin 970 chip, along with plenty of memory and a huge battery. Exposure is usually spot-on and the dynamic range is one of the widest we have measured on any smartphone, making the Huawei ideal for shooting in difficult high-contrast situations. Product information is subject to such changes and adjustments without notice. In the night shot comparison below, you can see that the Huawei sample shows better detail and significantly lower noise levels than the competition from Apple and Google. This phone is actually slimmer and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus at just 7. Quite a lot has changed with their cameras between the Huawei P20 Pro and new P30 Pro, although there are some similarities to the formula. The in-display fingerprint sensor isn't as fast as a traditional module, but I haven't faced any reliability issues. The camera arrangement at the back also looks better on the Mate 20 Pro, and aside from the aesthetic value, what I like is that the phone doesn't wobble anymore when laid flat on a surface. Please make sure you check the corresponding terms of purchase and privacy policy. Please also read our and , which became effective December 20, 2019. Warranty does not cover liquid damage. The system works very well, though, resulting in stabilization performance that is a touch better than even the excellent Google Pixel 2. That's not all, for the phone is able to charge other devices as well. Just know that it takes anywhere from a second to a second and a half for the sensor to authenticate your fingerprint. If you're looking to save some cash, the P20 Pro is a great alternative to the Mate 20 Pro. Both phones easily take the vast majority of users into a second day on a single full charge. The Huawei works very efficiently both when holding the camera still and when walking while recording. All are highly reflective, though. In addition, target exposure is good in most conditions; white balance is accurate, with smooth convergence under changing illumination; and the autofocus system reacts swiftly and produces repeatable results. The P20 Pro also delivers bokeh over a large range of. In addition, the white balance system works accurately in almost all situations and adapts swiftly when changes. We have retested this device using the new Wide and Night test protocols and updated the scores in this review, but we have not changed the text from the original review. This can save you up to 40 minutes on a full charge cycle versus the already very fast charging P20 Pro. A point of criticism is inconsistencies in detail and white balance that we occasionally observed over several consecutive shots. The only real issue is that neither device is available in the U. Even for difficult lighting conditions, the Huawei P20 Pro is capable of capturing decent detail and controlling noise levels when zooming, making it the current best option for zooming in low light. For more information, refer to the aforementioned product details. We can also see a slight loss of fine detail in bright light due to noise reduction, and videos recorded under tungsten light have an orange-colored cast. Huawei not only changed the arrangement of the sensors but also switched out the monochrome module for a wide-angle lens, which is a welcome addition. Google Pixel 2 — crop The situation is very similar for the long-range backlit portrait and the night shots below. The mode can be used at 27-, 55-, and 80mm -equivalent focal lengths, but as usual, we have done our lab testing at the 55mm default setting only. Google Pixel 2 The P20 Pro does an excellent job in the difficult backlit portrait scene below. It also maintains pleasant when the light gets dimmer, making the P20 Pro a very easy pick for any low-light smartphone photographer. For more information, please see the articles about our new and test protocols. On the downside, some fine colored detail can occasionally be a little undersaturated when viewed up-close, and we sometimes observed a very slight pink or orange cast in bright light. There isn't a single area where the Mate 20 Pro is found lacking. Huawei was keen to highlight this particular point during its launch presentation. Other parts of the phone are a little more conventional. Test results are available on and in the press. As you can see in the graph below, the P20 Pro autofocus is very quick and delivers consistently accurate results, even at a low light level of 20 Lux. The list of negatives is pretty concise: aliasing is fairly frequent in video clips and some stepping can be visible when the exposure is adapting to changing light levels. Images are sharp across the , with pleasant textures and a lot of detail. Only the glass does, and just the last millimeter or so at that. Like other Huawei phones, you can also tune the color temperature to your liking, although the default setting is pleasant. As you can see in the test samples below, depth estimation is very good, resulting in only minor segmentation artifacts around the subject. In addition, autofocus, auto , and exposure all operate reliably down to very low light levels. If you are looking for the current best camera in a smartphone, look no further. The result is a mobile more interesting than the or S9 Plus, particularly if you're going to make use of all the camera's high-end features. The Huawei P20 Pro — along with the standard — was the first but not the last Huawei phone with a notch, the display cut-out made famous by the iPhone X. A bigger win for the P30 Pro can be found in memory. It takes you to the home screen in a heartbeat. This phone has surprised and delighted me like few others, and what you are about to read is a collection of happy words about it. This is true for both a short and longer delay before capture. You can verify if your Huawei P20 Pro is rooted or not, download , open it and click on Verify Root. The real star here is low light performance, though. At the same time, the camera is capable of preserving a lot of the bright detail. This setup remains in place with the P30 Pro. The Mate 20 Pro delivers excellent battery life in and of itself — I routinely got two days' worth of use — but the incredible fast charging essentially eliminates the need to plug in the phone overnight. Huawei also has a 3D face unlock feature that is a viable stand-in, but the caveat is that it doesn't work very well if you have a beard. Although the two phones feature slightly different configurations, both sport cutting-edge pieces of camera technology. The option to use reverse wireless charging to power up your Qi-enabled accessories is another nice touch. It's two big plates of rounded-off Gorilla Glass with a filling of metal finishing off its sides. Image Credit: TechRadar It works, in our experience, every time. Its removal has freed up a lot of room at the bottom bezel, and the result is that the bottom bar is significantly thinner than the one on the P20 Pro. In the same light conditions the iPhone X captures an underexposed image and is not capable of generating a bokeh effect. A slight loss of very fine detail is noticeable when inspecting bright-light images up-close, but overall, the Huawei is up with the very best in terms of image detail, and it preserves good levels of detail across all light levels. We may earn a commission for purchases using our links. Read on to find out our full thoughts. We also observed a slight loss of and some and halo in some specific high-contrast scenes. The autofocus is very fast and accurate, and produces repeatable results in all light conditions. Zoom and Bokeh The Huawei P20 Pro comes with a two-pronged approach to zooming. After hitting a stride, the new takes everything that made the P20 Pro a hit and aims to build on it. In the comparison samples below you can see that even in very low light the P20 Pro is capable of generating a nice bokeh effect with good depth estimation. Designed to be exceptional in every way. On the downside, some very slight color shading is noticeable in some shots, and occasionally the camera processing does not correct for red-eye effect. This article is designed to highlight the most important results of our testing. In bright light, the P20 Pro delivers excellent image quality, with pleasant colors, good detail, and very low noise levels. We also observed a halo effect around some edges and occasional in those images. The P20 Pro is particularly good in low light, when zooming, and for bokeh simulation, blowing its direct rivals out of the water. Like most Chinese manufacturers, Huawei has switched to an in-display solution for the Mate 20 Pro, which is no different from the modules seen on the or the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro. Personally, I think the P30 Pro pulls ahead in terms of design. The detail in zoom images is unprecedented for smartphones, especially for medium- and long-range shots, and noise levels are low in all light conditions, making the P20 Pro by far your best option if zooming is high up on your list of priorities. The phone is one of the best I've used all year, and there isn't an area where I found it to be lacking. Pixel density of 408ppi isn't even close to the 529ppi of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. Better still, the curved back and front glass means the P30 Pro sits perfectly in the hand. Google Pixel 2 Bokeh mode also performs well in indoor and low light conditions, with a pretty good subject masking and low noise compared to competition. The sensors on the P20 Pro jutted out slightly from the body, and as they weren't in the center, it led to a lot of wobbles. Bokeh mode does kick in on the Google Pixel 2 but the image shows several strong depth estimation errors. In the scene below the P20 Pro creates an overall very nice bokeh effect. Vivid color deepens tones a little, with a slight subtlety trade-off. This is especially noticeable in difficult high-contrast lighting conditions in which the Huawei is capable of preserving a lot of detail in the bright parts of a scene. Watch the P20 Pro in action below as we review the phone's design and screen: Want to know just how good the Huawei P20 Pro is, to see if a slightly older yet more affordable smartphone is the right fit for you? Huawei P30 Pro Huawei P20 Pro Display 6. In fact, the Mate 20 Pro falls somewhere in between the S9 and S9+ in terms of size, even though it has a 6. Huawei is not responsible and has no control over this third party websites. This said, the mid-range zoom samples below were taken in bright light, and in our comparison, you can see that the P20 Pro is capable of squeezing noticeably more detail out of the scene than the competition. Although we would prefer the cheaper and more universal card format. Both phones have high-end hardware and evocative designs, backed by excellent cameras that hold up to the best that Samsung and Google have to offer. The Huawei P20 Pro is a phone that stands out with its large, spacious display and its triple camera at the back. Being able to pick the best camera for a specific shooting situation and computationally merge the image data from all three sensors means that the new Huawei beats the competition in virtually every category, taking the number one spots in both our Photo and Video rankings. This is particularly noticeable on the skin tones and makes the Huawei the smartphone of choice for low-light portraiture and shooting in dim conditions in general. Image Credit: TechRadar You'll most likely forget the notch is there after a couple of days, particularly as when watching standard 16:9 video there are black bars where the notch sits anyway. We also expanded our low-light testing and created the new Night sub-score, which incorporates the previous Flash score. This replaces the 3x telephoto lens in the P20 Pro. Noise is very well under control, too, with virtually no visible in areas of plain color, such as blue skies. Huawei still offers a monochrome mode, and I didn't notice too much of a difference between the monochrome on the P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro. However, if you really have to use flash, the Huawei P20 Pro is the best smartphone for that purpose. The bundled wall unit charges the Mate 20 Pro from flat to 70 percent in just over 30 minutes, and that fundamentally changes how you use the device. Apple iPhone X Photo scores explained With a total photo score of 114, the Huawei P20 Pro is currently the highest-ranked smartphone for still image capture by quite a margin. As Huawei's phones still don't have the innate desirability of a Samsung or Apple, raw outer hardware was never going to be the top selling point of the Huawei P20 Pro. Huawei has also followed another recent trend, as the Huawei P20 Pro doesn't have a headphone jack. Also worth noting, the P20 Pro ships with a pre-fitted screen protector, giving it the best chance of avoiding scratches possible. The dual curved screen makes it almost seem like a Galaxy S9. A loss of detail is noticeable when viewing the full-size image but noise levels are low. However, the camera is not only capable of keeping noise down, it also renders fine textures very well. The comparison devices lag behind the Huawei by quite a margin. Bright light The Huawei P20 Pro delivers excellent image in all bright-light conditions. It's an easy choice Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs. The P20 Pro also picked up the Android 9. But sheer reflective spangliness makes this phone stand out. Photography, design, and performance have all been knocked up a notch this year. The screen is not only larger, but it is also sporting a higher-res panel. And it has a much larger battery than most, 4,000mAh, without any obvious added bulk to the shell. That's right, it's even 'wider' or longer than most other 18:9 screen phones. And the P20 Pro is no slouch either in video mode, thanks to class-leading image stabilization, a good autofocus, and very low noise levels. It was a solid package that continues to be one of the. As one would expect, you have to live with a loss of detail when zooming compared to wide-angle image output. Its display can change the color temperature on the fly to suit ambient light conditions, and the top part of the screen can be blacked out to completely hide the notch. The monochrome sensor in the camera setup serves several purposes: it helps with depth estimation for the simulated effect, and the fine detail and low levels of the monochrome sensor improve image quality when zooming and in low light. Battery life depends on actual usage situation. If you're looking to buy a Huawei P20 Pro, the first thing you should know is that after and security updates, there are serious question marks over the future of Huawei and Honor phones. If you find it a bit much, the other finishes are lower key. However, the notch is smaller. Huawei P30 Pro vs P20 Pro: Which should I buy? While the Huawei P20 Pro isn't Huawei's most powerful smartphone any more, due to the release of the powerhouse, it's still a great device, and it's now affordable well, relatively speaking thanks to the launch of its powerful successor. The overall Photo score is calculated from sub-scores in tests that examine different aspects of its performance under different lighting conditions. Google Pixel 2 — 5 Lux If you click through to the full-size versions of the night portrait below, you can see that the Huawei P20 Pro is capable of preserving good image detail while producing very low levels of noise in these conditions. Google Pixel 2 Video scores explained The Huawei P20 Pro achieves a Video score of 98 points, making it also the number one camera in our video rankings, albeit not by the same large margin as for still images. Like other recent higher-end Huawei phones, the P20 Pro makes quite an impact with its highly reflective glass finish. If you are rooted you will get an appropriatemessage. Depth-estimation is very precise, resulting in very good subject segmentation and only minor artifacts. As with previous high-end Huawei smartphones, the main sensor is supported by a secondary monochrome sensor which helps further increase photon capture. Plus, if you need added convenience, the Mate 20 Pro charges wirelessly over the Qi standard. The Tele also outputs 10Mp image. Another major change is the introduction of a periscope zoom camera in the P30 Pro. Unlike the stainless steel iPhone X though, a month into using the P20 Pro, the frame is scratch-free, boding well for the phone's durability. If you already have the P20 Pro, it makes little sense to pick up the Mate 20 Pro. The Huawei P20 Pro is also a little prone to fingerprint smudges and the slightly raised camera housing picks up dust fairly quickly. The dual curved screen makes it much more premium, and the cameras are more refined, but it's not so fundamentally different from the P20 Pro that it warrants an upgrade. In spite of its massive networking and telecommunications business, and the millions of phones it sells in its native China, Huawei has. Image Credit: TechRadar You also have a choice of color profiles. We would, obviously, prefer a real jack. Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance may decrease over time with normal use. Using all three modules of the triple camera setup, the P20 Pro is capable of capturing very high levels of detail at medium range, and detail that is still good at long range, outperforming all of its rivals in the high-end bracket of the market by a sizable margin. That means we don't know if the Huawei P20 Pro could get Android R or Android S when they come along in the future. It also performs remarkably well in indoor conditions, as you can see in the sample images below. Its huge screen occupies most of its front, with a notch at the top housing the earpiece and front-facing camera. Conclusion: Game changer We are used to every new smartphone camera generation being slightly better than the previous one, but looking at the images and test results from the P20 Pro, it seems Huawei has skipped one or two generations. We've looked at almost every smartphone on the market, including Huawei, which is the second-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. All data is subject to actual usage. We know that while its flagships were always well-regarded, the company raised its game in 2018. The edgeless fingerprint sensor with smart navigation instead of the virtual bar can offer an additional informative area. Subject exposure is good with the iPhone X, but most of the bright background is clipped. Color saturation and viewing angles are excellent, and the screen gets adequately bright under harsh sunlight. The handset offers more screen real estate thanks to its thinner bezels and lack of chin. It then immediately starts scanning for your face.。 。 。 。 。
